SYNOPSIS
Impatient and angry, the old merchant Uberto awaits his maid servant Serpina who doesn’t want to bring him his chocolate milk. Serpina became so arrogant and bossy over the years that she has started to command her master Uberto instead of obeying him. He has had enough of his maid servant’s behaviour and asks his butler Vespone to find him a wife in order to get rid of Serpina. However, Vespone is sweet-talked by the revolting Serpina. The conspiracy of the two servants causes decisions Uberto never thought possible.
ABOUT
LA SERVA PADRONA is a comic opera intermezzo by the Italian composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710-1736). The opera lasts 45 minutes and was originally performed between the acts of a larger serious opera. LA SERVA PADRONA is inspired by the Commedia dell’arte tradition: apart from individuals, Serpina, Uberto and the dressed up Vespone are also representatives of different social classes. Commedia dell’arte has always had a big subversive potential because of its need to turn high and low upside down. In today’s world, however, where the old masters themselves became slaves of vast mechanic processes (after all, what is the power of the merchant Uberto when set against the global rule of finance capital?) turning things upside down is more difficult than ever. The only certainty is that there will always be a moment at which people from low social classes start to revolt.
